48th Avenue Bridge Replacement Update

Posted on June 4, 2018 at 9:25 AM by Ashton Ford

On May 31st another on site meeting was held between the City, AMEC Foster Wheeler, and PSA. At this meeting, PSA gave an update of their progress.

The City and PSA are both happy with how things are proceeding in regards to safety and environmental considerations. With the rainfall in the past week, steps have been taken to manage the flow of water away from the site to keep the area as safe and efficient as possible for workers. Similarly, they are continuing to monitor water runoff to ensure the water quality within Mirror Lake and Camrose Creek is not affected.
Both PSA and AMEC were reminded of the upcoming Jaywalkers Jamboree event and the expected increase to vehicle and pedestrian within the City as a result. PSA confirmed that there should be no conflicts between the project and Jaywalkers.

In the previous two weeks, many events have been happening on site. The installation of the box culverts has been completed, and the pile cap has been installed on the west side of the new bridge. Along with this installation, work is now being done to construct the back wall for the west side, and will take about two weeks to complete. Once the back walls are finished, the bridge girders that were constructed earlier in the year at a factory near Red Deer can be installed on the abutments and pile caps. This is scheduled to begin in early, July. While the current work is being done, the beginning stages of utilities installation on the east side, and preparations for the new retaining-wall adjacent from the Wild Rose Co-op staff parking lot are both being focused on as well. The construction of the retaining wall will begin in about two weeks and should take about a month to complete.

Along with this long list of tasks being completed, PSA plans to start work on relocating the traffic signals at the intersection of 48 Avenue and 53 Street within the next week. The existing signal poles will eventually be placed on new bases that are north of the existing locations. This work is needed in order to construct the new westbound lane on the north side of 48 Avenue. While this signal work is happening, the City and PSA do not anticipate any further traffic restrictions at this intersection. However, the signals will need to be turned off while they are being relocated. Even once these lights are relocated, they will likely remain dark until near the end of the project.

The City would again, like to thank citizens for their patience and cooperation during this project. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Engineering Department at 780-672-4428 or at

May 28 – PSA installing a waterproofing seal along each joint of the pedestrian underpass to ensure that moisture does not enter the underpass from under the roadway.

May 29 – PSA compacting material across 48 Avenue on the east side of the new pedestrian underpass.

May 31 - Looking through the installed pedestrian underpass. Lighting within the underpass will be installed as part of this project in July.

May 31 – As part of the project, PSA was required to install additional catchbasins along 48 Avenue to improve drainage and to reduce the amount of water that flows across the new bridge. This new catchbasin was installed on the north side of 48 Avenue, just east of the pedestrian underpass. Note that the roadway will be raised up by approximately one metre at this location to match the elevation of the new catchbasin.
