Another Update from the Bridge Construction

Posted on August 13, 2018 at 10:52 AM by Ashton Ford

Since the last update, the design changes and new timeline have been approved. As stated in a previous post, the south walking trail going across the bridge will be reduced from 4 metres to 2 metres in order to accommodate a wider roadway. Even with the changes, the project remains on budget, and a new finish date has been set for early to mid-October.

Another on-site meeting was held on August 9, 2018. Everyone was happy to hear that there were no safety issues at the bridge site as a result of the Big Valley Jamboree traffic. The City did inform PSA that there was a recent accident along one of the bypass routes (at 47 Avenue and 50 Street), and that the City has made some changes along the bypass to minimize the risk of this happening again.

During the meeting, PSA detailed the work that they completed in the past two weeks, and what they expect to complete in the next few weeks. On the east side of the bridge, Border Paving has started preparing the sub-base for the roadway. In about two weeks, they will be finished on the east side and will do the same for the west. Once the sub-base is ready, Border will start placing and compacting gravel for the new base of the roadway. On top of this base, Border and PSA will construct the future roadway, including the concrete curbs, gutters and medians, as well as the asphalt paving. Currently on the west side, the bases for the traffic lights just north of the intersection at 48 Avenue and 53 Street are being adjusted into their final position.

As mentioned above, with the design edits approved, PSA is working hard to realign the roadway on the bridge. A crane was on site on August 9th to remove two of the existing girders. Once the girders were removed and the site prepared, the crane was able to successfully reposition the girders in their final locations. With that work not done, PSA can re-pour the sections of the approaching concrete slabs that had to be removed.

The City would again, like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation during this project. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Engineering Department at 780-672-4428 or at engineer@camrose.ca.

August 9 – Hydro-Vac truck removing soil in preparation of moving the 53 Street traffic signal poles into their final positions.

August 9 – One of the concrete girders which were removed prior to reinstallation in its final position. This visible curb on this girder will provide the south edge of the eastbound lanes on 48 Avenue, and will separate the eastbound lanes from the south walkway. The bolts that are sticking up from the girder’s curb will support the roadway guardrail that protects pedestrians on the south walkway.

August 9 – Border Paving preparing the road sub-base near the northeast corner of the project.

August 9 – PSA’s electrical subcontractor trenching in electrical conduit that will provide power to the LED lights within the pedestrian underpass.
