Update on the Roadway Progress

Posted on October 1, 2018 at 8:35 AM by Ashton Ford

As you may have seen, PSA has now placed the final layers of asphalt on the roadway. With roadway paving now complete, PSA immediately moved into the pouring of concrete center median along the length of the road. All of this work was completed late last week. At the same time, Border Paving started preparing the base for the paving of the pedestrian trails. Weather permitting, this will take about 2 weeks to complete. While Border Paving works on the trails, and the concrete median is allowed to cure, PSA will make progress on the line painting and guardrail installation. Fortis Alberta will also install new streetlights along 48 Avenue before the road is re-opened.

Considering all of the work yet to be finished, the City believes that this project will be complete by mid- to late-October. The City is in initial planning stages for an official grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony in early November, which should be approximately two weeks after the road and trails are open to the public.

The City has asked PSA about the possibility of re-opening the roadway to the public while PSA continues work on the landscaping and the trails. At this time, it is unlikely that this will be possible. If PSA was to re-open the road before the project’s completion, it would effectively turn the single construction site into 4 smaller construction sites. This would drag out the time that PSA’s workers and subcontractors to complete their remaining tasks, and would reduce safety to workers as compared to the safety inherent in a single controlled site. The City is pleased that PSA considered the possibility of this early opening, but in the interest of the workers safety and the projects efficiency, the road will likely remained closed until the project is complete.

The City would again, like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation during this project. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Engineering Department at 780-672-4428 or at engineer@camrose.ca.
