Why toilets? |
1. The toilet is the number one water user in the home, attributing to nearly 30% of the total indoor water use.
2. It saves everyone a lot of money. By switching to a low-flow toilet, an average family of four could save up to $100 per year on their utility bill! The City of Camrose saves money too because there is less water that has to be drawn from Dried Meat Lake and treated each year.
3. Using less water reduces our impact on aquatic animals, and the impacts of climate change.
4. The technology to cut toilet water use in half is now more readily available than ever before.
5. It is extremely easy to replace an existing toilet with a newer and more efficient model.
6. Everyone is doing it! Municipalities all around Alberta are giving incentives for toilet replacement. This includes Edmonton, Red Deer, Okotoks, and Calgary, along with many others.
|
Who can qualify? |
All City of Camrose residents who replace a toilet that uses more than 10 litres per flush with a new and approved low-flow toilet are eligible. Please note that this program is aimed specifically at toilets that are greater than 10 litres in flush volume, toilets that are smaller but have operational issues such as leaks will not be considered. |
How much is the rebate? |
There is no limit on the number of toilets per household that can qualify for the rebate. If a single toilet is being replaced, the rebate is $70. If multiple toilets are being replaced, the rebate will be $70 for the first toilet, as well as an additional rebate of 25% of the cost of each additional toilet (with a maximum rebate of $50 per additional toilet). |
Is it worth it? |
YES! By installing a low flow toilet you will be conserving water, one of earth's most precious resources. In fact, depending on your old toilet, you could save over 13,000 litres per person per year! In addition, a typical family of four could save up to $100 a year plus the $70 rebate for an individual toilet when the toilet is first installed. This means a new toilet could pay for itself in a year, and after that it's all savings! |
How do I tell how many litres my toilet is using per flush? |
Follow these steps to find out: How Many Litres Do I Use Per Flush?
If you are unsure the toilet you want will meet the requirements, please contact the business you plan on purchasing from.
|
What kind of toilet can I use?
|
In order to qualify for this rebate, the toilet that you purchase must have a flush volume of 6L or less and a MaP score of 800 or greater, and your old toilet must have a capacity of 10 litres per flush or greater.
If you are unsure the toilet you want will meet these requirements, please contact the business you plan on purchasing from.
|
Why does my new toilet need to meet a flush volume requirement and a MaP requirement?
|
Toilets have to meet a flush volume requirement to make sure that the owner and the City of Camrose conserve water, and the MaP score ensures that the toilet will not require multiple flushes. The City of Camrose wishes to ensure that although your new low flow toilet uses 6 litres per flush or less, it will still get the job done. |
I hear that 6 litre toilets are unreliable and require "double flushing". Is this true?
|
Low volume toilets have been drastically redesigned since they were first introduced in North America. Low flush toilets now use new tank and bowl designs to increase the velocity of the water as it flows down the drain, while older toilets use an inefficient swirling motion which requires a lot more water. Most toilets undergo Maximum Performance Testing (MaP) program, led by the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA). The toilets that meet our requirements have been shown to meet and exceed minimum performance standards for toilets. For more information about this program please visit the website www.map-testing.com. If you have questions about how your specific toilet will perform you can also contact the City of Camrose by phone at 780.672.4428 or by email at toiletrebate@camrose.ca. |
How can I have my toilet installed? |
You may have the toilet installed by a plumber or you may install it yourself. Please ensure that the toilet has been installed properly according to the manufacturer's instructions.
|
Can I keep my old toilet? |
To ensure that there is actually a reduction in the amount of water used within the City, it is of the utmost importance that older high-volume toilets do not get re-installed elsewhere. Your application requires that you take a photograph of the old toilet made unusable (crack the tank, take out working parts, etc.). If you are particularly attached to your old toilet, you can get creative and turn it into a work of art, or something used for a different function, such as a flowerpot or a fountain. |
What if I have a problem with my toilet?
|
New toilets should have warranty. Check with the retail outlet or toilet manufacturer for details on the warranty your toilet has.
|
I need to keep my receipt to claim warranty. Do I submit a photocopy?
|
The City of Camrose requires that you submit the original receipt with your application package. This will be returned along with your confirmation and payment. |
I just installed a toilet in my home last year. Can I still receive the rebate?
|
This offer is valid as long as your toilet was installed after September 29, 2023, and you still have all of the required documents.
|
How long does it take to get a rebate?
|
All rebates will be sent out as quickly as possible and should be issued before the end of 2024.
|
I want to have my toilet replaced but I can't get a plumber to do it until October!
|
That's OK! While the application to receive the rebate must be received before September 30, 2024, you'll have until October 31, 2024, to have all of your evidence in. That means you could have your toilet installed in October and still be eligible for a rebate. |
What has to be in my application package?
|
1. The 2024 Toilet Rebate Application Form.
2. A picture of the old toilet installed in your home.
3. A picture of the new low-flow toilet installed in the same place.
4. Photo evidence that shows the old toilet made unusable.
5. The receipt from the purchase of your new approved toilet, dated after September 29, 2023.
The application form should be submitted to City Hall as early as possible to ensure that you are included in the rebate program. The rest may be submitted together as late as October 31, 2024.
|
There seems to be a lot of things to remember to do. Is there a checklist I could follow instead?
|
