Is a deposit required to be handed in with a Candidate’s Nomination Form?
No, the City of Camrose has not passed a bylaw requiring a deposit.
When is Nomination Day?

Changes to the Local Authorities Election Act permits a Candidate to file Nomination Papers from January 1, 2021 until 12 noon on September 20, 2021. *NOTE – Before any Candidate can accept a campaign contribution they must have filed nomination papers with the Returning Officer or the Deputy Returning Officer.

Candidates for the office of Mayor and Councillor must file their nomination papers with the Returning Officer at City Hall.

How can Nomination Forms be delivered to the Returning Officer?

Any person may file a completed Nomination Form on behalf of a candidate to the Returning Officer at City Hall. All nomination papers must be received by no later than 12 noon on September 20, 2021. Faxes or e-mail will NOT be accepted. The candidate is responsible for the accuracy and completion of the nomination form, not the Returning Officer. If a nomination is not signed by at least 5 electors, the Returning Officer shall not accept it.

Who can be Nominated for Council?

A person may be nominated as a candidate if, on Nomination Day, he/she

  • is eligible to vote in this election,
    • is at least 18 years old,
    • is a Canadian Citizen, and
    • has resided in Alberta for the 6 consecutive months immediately preceding Election Day and the person’s place of residence is located in the City of Camrose on Election Day.
  • has been a resident of the City of Camrose for 6 consecutive months immediately preceding Nomination Day, and
  • is not otherwise ineligible or disqualified.
Can a Candidate withdraw their nomination?

If more than the required number of candidates for the office of Councillor are nominated, any person so nominated, may, at any time within 24 hours after the close of the nominations (that is, before 12 Noon on September 21, 2021), withdraw his/her name as a candidate for the office for which he/she was nominated by filing in person a written notice of withdrawal to the Returning Officer. Faxed or emailed notices of withdrawal are NOT accepted.

What happens if the nominations received meet, but do not exceed the number of positions available?

If the number of nominations does not exceed the number of positions available, after the close of nominations, the Returning Officer will declare the candidate(s) nominated for the position elected by acclamation.

What happens if the nominations received do not meet or exceed the positions required to be elected?
If there are not enough nominations for the positions to be filled the Returning Officer shall continue to open up for nominations to be filed from 10:00 am to 12 noon on the day of when the required number of nominations has been received or a period of 6 days, including nomination day but not including Saturday, Sunday and holidays. If after that time period there is still insufficient nominations the City is required to immediately notify the Minister.

Members of City Council receive the following honorarium:

Mayor - $62,534.78 per annum

Councillor - $21,633.50 per year annum
