Abatement and Demolition of Downtown Public Washroom Building

In line with community feedback, the City will be saying goodbye to the downtown public washroom building, located in the parking lot on 49 street. Asbestos abatement will begin on September 23, with the demolition of the building scheduled for mid to late October.  The demolition will be completed by City staff.

The decision to demolish this structure follows the City’s 2022 Public Washroom Assessment, which identified safety concerns with its location and “line of sight” issues, particularly at the women’s entrance. This building has been closed since January 2025.

Washrooms at the Bill Fowler Centre, the Library, the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre, or City Hall continue to be available during regular operating hours.

For safety reasons, the public is asked to avoid the construction area while work is underway.
