Downtown Public Washroom Demolition Scheduled for November 10

In line with community feedback, the City will be saying goodbye to the downtown public washroom building, located in the parking lot on 49 street. This building has been closed since January 2025. Asbestos abatement was completed in September, and demolition of the building will commence on November 10. The adjacent parking lot and alley parking stalls will be closed for the duration of the demolition work. For safety reasons, the public is asked to avoid the demolition area while work is underway.

The decision to demolish this structure follows the City’s 2022 Public Washroom Assessment, which identified safety concerns with its location and “line of sight” issues, particularly at the women’s entrance.

Washrooms at the Bill Fowler Centre, the Library, the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre, or City Hall continue to be available during regular operating hours.
