Max McLean Arena and Curling Rink Facility Closures Update - February 26, 2025
Repairs to the Max McLean Ice Plant are continuing, with some additional work required to complete the coolant replacement process.
A new heat exchanger has been installed, and crews continue working to fully remove the old coolant and flush the system before new coolant can be pumped in. Flushing of the system will continue until the residual ammonia concentration is reduced to an acceptable level. This process may need to continue over the upcoming weekend.
Once the new coolant is in place, the system will begin to lower the floor temperature. This step is anticipated to take place late next week. Once the floor reaches the appropriate temperature, staff will begin rebuilding the ice surfaces, aiming to have the ice ready around March 12, 2026.
In addition, at the February 23, 2026 Regular Council Meeting, Council approved funding of $30,000 in 2026 to complete a full condition assessment of the Max McLean Arena and Camrose Curling Rink. This assessment will provide detailed information on the overall state of the facilities and help guide future repair or replacement decisions.
The City will continue to share updates as work progresses and appreciates the patience and cooperation of user groups and residents throughout this process.
