Please Reduce Non-Essential Water Usage
Camrose, we need your help again! We’re asking for you to please limit non-essential water use wherever you can. Even though the rain has stopped for now, our wastewater system is still under a lot of pressure.
Our Wastewater Treatment Plant is currently operating at maximum capacity. In addition, our emergency storm overflow ponds, which are designed to take on excessive flow during major storm events and then pump that water back into the system later, are at risk of breaching if flows continue to remain high.
After last week’s heavy rainfall, and with more rain in the forecast, City staff had been working day and night to prepare and respond. Crews are still working hard, checking problem areas, looking for blockages, and using drone surveillance to help assess conditions. Vac trucks are also being used to pump water and help relieve pressure on the system where possible.
We continue to monitor flow rates around the clock and will adjust our response as conditions change. The Mayer Aquatic Centre has been put on notice and may close if needed to reduce water use.
How residents can help
Until further notice, please reduce any water use that can safely wait. Small changes across the community can make a big difference.
- Holding off on running the washing machine or dishwasher
- Taking shorter showers and avoiding baths
- Turning off taps while brushing teeth or washing dishes
- Checking that sump pumps and downspouts are working properly
- Postponing any other water use that is not immediately necessary.
Safety reminder
For your safety, please completely avoid the summer off-leash dog area and watch for potential upcoming parks and trail closures. Additionally, please stay away from any flooded areas and standing or flowing water. Floodwater can be contaminated, fast-moving, or hide hazards under the surface.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation. Your help matters and will support our crews as they work to protect the wastewater system and our community. We will continue to share updates as we know more.
