Public Notice: Max McLean Arena and Curling Rink Facility Closures

During routine maintenance and monitoring of the Max McLean Ice Plant, staff noticed a potential issue earlier in January. At that time, communication was sent to user groups about the issue and the possibility of service disruptions. Continued monitoring has since confirmed an ammonia buildup in the brine that circulates beneath the ice surfaces in the Max McLean Arena and Curling Rink, caused by a failure in the heat exchanger in the Ice Plant Room.

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to repair the issue, the ice plant has just experienced a major failure.

Due to the potential risks, and with the safety of our patrons and staff as our top priority, both the Max McLean Arena and the Curling Rink will be closed immediately and until further notice.

We recognize the significant disruption this may cause and would like to express that the decision to close the facilities was not made lightly. City staff will be working closely with our patrons to make accommodations and adjust schedules in any way possible.

Given the scope of the issue, we have been actively working to assess options and will continue to do so. More information will be shared at a later date.
