Lifesaving Society Advanced Courses

Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion & CPR-C

Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness - the four components of water rescue - form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training Bronze Cross.  

The following prerequisites must be complete prior to registering for this course:

  • Minimum of 13 years of age at the time of exam

Lifesaving Society Intermediate First Aid and Oxygen Administration

Lifesaving Society Intermediate First Aid and Oxygen Administration provides comprehensive training which covers all aspects of First Aid and CPR. Participants must be a minimum of 8 years of age.  

Lifesaving Society Intermediate First Aid - Recertification

Lifesaving Society Intermediate First Aid and Oxygen Administration provides comprehensive training which covers all aspects of First Aid and CPR. Participants must be a minimum of 8 years of age.

Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross

Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards.  Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities.  Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies.  Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society's National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs.

The following prerequisites must be complete prior to registering for this course:

  • Bronze Medallion 
  • CPR-C
  • Intermediate First Aid (formerly known as Standard First Aid)

Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard

National Lifeguard (NL) builds on the fundamental skills, knowledge and values taught in the lifesaving awards of the Lifesaving Society to develop the practical skills and knowledge required by lifeguards. Designed to prepare lifeguards to fulfill this role as professional facilitators of safe, enjoyable aquatics.  

Please note, there is a timed swim that is required to meet in order to complete this award.  

The following prerequisites must be complete prior to registering for this course:

  • Completion of Bronze Cross (does not need to be current)
  • Intermediate First Aid (formerly known as Standard First Aid)
  • Minimum of 15 years of age at the time of the exam

Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard - Recertification

National Lifeguard (NL) builds on the fundamental skills, knowledge and values taught in the lifesaving awards of the Lifesaving Society to develop the practical skills and knowledge required by lifeguards. Designed to prepare lifeguards to fulfill this role as professional facilitators of safe, enjoyable aquatics.  

Please note, there is a timed swim that is required to meet in order to complete this award.  

The following prerequisites must be complete prior to registering for this course:

  • Intermediate First Aid (formerly known as Standard First Aid)
  • Have previously completed the National Lifeguard Course 

Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor

Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Swim for Life and Canadian Swim Patrol programs. The Swim for Life program includes Parent & Tot levels, Preschool levels and Swimmer levels.

Swim for Life is a comprehensive swim instruction program that focuses on the acquisition and development of fundamental swim strokes and skills for learners of all ages and abilities. Swim for Life is accessible, flexible, success-orientated and fun. The Society provides instructors with a variety of tools to make this drowning and injury prevention education last a lifetime.

The following prerequisites must be complete prior to registering for this course:

  • 15 years old
  • Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross (need not be current)

Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor

This is a stand alone 16 hour Lifesaving Instructor course.

Lifesaving Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Medals, Distinction, Boat Rescue and Lifesaving Society CPR programs.

The Lifesaving Instructor course prepares Instructors to apply level 1 leadership competencies and strategies while teaching and evaluating.
Lifesaving Instructor certification is the prerequisite for other Lifesaving Society Instructor certifications. Certification in Alberta and Northwest Territories includes CPR Instructor certification.

The following prerequisites must be complete prior to registering for this course:

  • Swim Instructor certification

Lifesaving Society SwimAbilities Instructor

The SwimAbilities Instructor Course prepares instructors to apply level 2 leadership competencies and strategies designed to reach candidates with specialized needs requiring additional support for skill development and safety routines.

100% attendance in this course is required.

The following prerequisites must be completed prior to registering for this course:

  • Current Swim or Lifesaving Instructor

Lifesaving Society Sport Coach 1

Coaches are responsible for training athletes for Lifesaving Sport and teaching and evaluation candidates participating in the Junior Lifeguard Club and Lifesaving Sport programs.

The Coach 1 course prepares Coaches to apply level 2 leadership competencies and strategies while coaching and evaluating.

The following prerequisites must be complete prior to registering for this course:

  • Lifesaving Instructor or higher (need not be current)

Lifesaving Society Certifications

1. Lifesaving Society Intermediate First Aid (IFA) or comparable

Prerequisite: None

Description: First aid is a valuable life skill that saves lives by providing people with the skills and judgement to respond to a variety of first aid emergencies. Certification current for 3 years.

Please note that CPR-C is required but no longer included in the Intermediate First Aid.

2. Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion

Prerequisite: 13 years old or Bronze Star certification

4. Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard (NL)

Prerequisite: 15 years old, Bronze Cross certification & SFA

Description: The LSS’s National Lifeguard certification builds on the fundamental skills, knowledge, fitness, judgment and values taught in the prerequisite Lifesaving Society lifesaving certifications. Please note, there is a timed swim to be completed. Certification current for 2 years.

100% attendance and participation of all Lifesaving Society courses is required.
