Lifesaving Sport

Lifesaving Sport is the only sport rooted in humanitarian principles of drowning prevention. It offers opportunities for all ages of athletes to learn to swim, build their swimming and lifesaving skills and enter competitions if they so desire to. Our season focuses on building the endurance and skill of every athlete. For those attending competitions, they have an opportunity to compete regionally, provincially and if they meet the eligibility criteria they can compete nationally and internationally.

The club coaches are excited to share their passion of swimming with every athlete. The philosophy is to build community and to foster teamwork and further develop the skills of each athlete. We are looking forward to another strong season.

The group descriptions are to help register athletes into groups they will likely find the best success with. They are not hard and fast rules. Athletes can be moved to appropriate groups at the discretion of the Head Coach. Should you have any questions about what group works best for your athlete, we are here to assist you.

This is our introductory group.

The athletes are typically young and just starting out on their journey with the sport. We focus on teaching the basics of swimming techniques and build the endurance and capacity of the athlete. Each session is 45 minutes long and take place primarily in the competition pool.

Prerequisites:  Athletes are suggested to be able to swim 25 meters, unassisted on their front. They should have no fear of the competition pool. We suggest the athletes are between the ages of 5-7 years old.

This group is perfect for teenagers. While the skill of this group may vary the dedication does not. Swimmers will practice for 2-hour sessions for a total of 10 hours every week. This group will support the teenage swimmer who wants to become more proficient with their skills, swimmers thinking of advancing to become a lifeguard, to the swimmer with goals of swimming competitively at the national level or international level. We focus on mastering the skills of swimming, developing endurance and speed, dryland routines, nutrition and the mental practice in preparation for competition.

Prerequisites: The swimmer must be dedicated to practice and have the maturity to attend a longer practice session. Ideally, they should have completed at least one session of Core 4, or had some competitive swimming experience, or had a strong desire and dedication to become proficient with swimming. Alternatively, we suggest they have completed at least Lifesaving Swimmer 4 and can swim 100m continuous. We suggest athletes are between the ages of 14-19 years old.

Calling all adults who want to learn to swim, practice swimming or find a community to grow their love of swimming – this program is for you!  Master swimmers practice twice a week for 1 hour each time. Master swimmers are met where they are at with their swimming skills and we work with you to improve and become more efficient with your strokes. The community of master’s swimmers is brilliant – it is a welcoming group of humans who are there to cheer you on to meet your individual goal. You are welcome and encouraged to compete with Lifesaving Sport but like all groups you are not required to. We even host a senior and masters meet at the start of the season with a try-it level.

Prerequisites: Some understanding of swimming and a willingness to work. All sessions are held in the competition pool.
