Application Process

Processing time for building permits is approximately 5 to 10 business days. The timeline depends on the project.

Inspections are normally required at the following stages:

  • Prior to backfilling a foundation
  • Prior to drywall or any other finishing process
  • Prior to occupancy

Two days' notice is required to book an inspection.

You will need to provide:

  • Your name
  • Project location
  • Permit number
  • Phone number
  • Access details

You need an electrical permit to install, alter or add to any electrical system whether it is residential, farm, commercial or industrial. These permits make sure that you install electrical systems properly and that they comply with the Safety Codes Act and Canadian Electrical Code.

Permit application

We usually issue electrical permits within a day or two from the application date and fee payment.

Before you start

We must receive your application and issue your permit before you start any wiring installation.

Electrical maintenance work

  • A permit is not required for electrical maintenance work.

You will need a gas permit to install, alter, or add to a gas system. Alterations to a gas line when installing gas barbeques, fireplaces, stove, or similar appliances or outlets require permits. This permit makes sure that you install gas systems properly and that they comply with the Safety Codes Act and Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code.

Gas maintenance work

A gas permit is not required for the replacement of a dryer, range, water heater or gas furnace if:

  • It is located in a Single Family Dwelling and no design change in any gas piping or venting system

You will need a plumbing permit to install, alter or add to a plumbing system.

Plumbing Maintenance work

A permit is not required to install plumbing fixtures in a Single Family Dwelling if the roughed-in piping was completed under another permit.

You will need a permit when installing a new private sewage system. The Alberta Private Sewage Systems Standard of Practice 2015 identifies the objective of private sewage systems and sets out the minimum requirements for health, safety, and structural sufficiency for private sewage systems.

System maintenance work

A permit is not required for the replacement of any equipment of a private sewage disposal system with units of similar type if the replacement is for the purpose of maintain the system and does not modify the design of the system.
